A guide on growing your portfolio and gaining experience photographing pets.

Growing your portfolio and gaining experience in this specific photography style is easier than you think and even more straightforward when you have pets or friends with pets. Still, this handy guide will ensure ease even if you have never experienced the snuggles of a furry friend.

Step #1 - Equipment

You don't need anything fancy; a smartphone will work just as well if you do not yet have a digital camera.

Step #2 - Find a pet

This step's difficulty level depends on your situation. If you have a pet, you're ready to go. If you do not, ask friends, family members or work colleagues if they would be interested in getting some free of charge photos of their pets. Ensure to advise them what to expect. If you're unsuccessful in this, there is an app called "BorrowMyDoggy". It matches local dog owners with trustworthy borrowers to assist them in caring for their pets, whether it's a walk, a weekend or a holiday.

Step #3 - Connect

Meet up with them get to know the owner and the pet. You will get better photographs if they feel comfortable with you. According to Landwer-Johan (2019), connecting with your subject is more important than connecting with your camera.

Step #4 - Arrange a date

As a start, set your first shoot to take place outside to make use of natural light, so ensure the day you arrange will be nice weather (primarily to save your equipment!)

Step #5 - Shoot!

The most important tip I can give you is to make sure you have treats AND toys for the pet; just in case they aren't food driven, you need a way to ensure they are interested in you throughout the shoot.
